The top House Democrat said he wouldn’t support extending a spy powers tool this week unless President Donald Trump reverses his selection of Bill Pulte as acting director of national intelligence, ratcheting up the odds of a lapse this weekend.

Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act is set to expire at the end of the week without congressional action. Negotiations continue in the Senate, but lawmakers are questioning whether the chambers can advance even a short-term patch as Democrats rebel against federal housing director Pulte’s installment in a key intelligence role.
