African Countries Negotiating Taxation of E-Commerce Platforms

African countries that have signed on to a continent-wide free trade agreement are fast-tracking negotiations on the taxation of e-commerce platforms, an official of the bloc said Thursday.

A protocol on e-commerce would “contribute a lot to the policy framework of the continent,” said Prudence Sebahizi, chief technical adviser and head of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement Negotiation Support Unit. “Especially in addressing some of the issues relating to data governance, electronic transaction and e-commerce taxation.”
