EU Extending Covid VAT Exemption For Import of Medical Goods

The European Union will extend exemption from customs duties and value added tax on imports of ventilators, oxygen tents, face masks and other coronavirus-relevant medical equipment, the European Commission said Tuesday.

Prolongation of the exemption is needed because of “the challenges that member states still face in combating the Covid-19 pandemic, and the fact that imports of these goods remain significant,” the commission, the EU’s executive, said in a statement.

The exemption covers medical goods procured by public authorities, including hospitals, and by health-focused charities.
