India to Cut Real Estate Taxes, Tweak GST Amid Criticism (1)

India is expected to cut levies on real estate and exempt some small businesses from paying the goods and services tax on Jan. 10—measures that could both relieve and create headaches for multinationals.

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council’s Jan. 10 meeting to finalize the changes comes as the government faces criticism from officials and companies for ongoing flaws with GST since its introduction in July 2017. The regime was designed to simplify tax collection by folding 17 levies into one, but has thrown up repeated challenges.
