Uganda Now Charging Tech Giants Tax for Electronic Services

Uganda has started collecting taxes from non-resident technology platforms offering electronic services locally as it seeks to widen its tax base.

Platforms such as Meta Platforms Inc.’s Facebook and Instagram, and companies including YouTube Inc, Alphabet Inc., Twitter Inc. are liable to pay 18% value-added tax, Uganda Revenue Authority spokesman Ibrahim Bbossa said Thursday. Apple Inc. is one of two companies that filed and paid 600 million shillings ($159,500) for the first quarter, he said.
