Bill Would Boost California Renter’s Tax Credit Set in 1979

For the first time since 1979, California would increase a tax credit for low-income people who rent their homes under a bill the state Senate passed Tuesday.

Senate Democrats want to include an increase to the renter’s tax credit in the budget package they are negotiating with Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) and Assembly Democratic leaders. The bill (S.B. 843) by Sen. Steve Glazer (D) passed 37-0 with bipartisan support as a standalone measure and moves to the Assembly for consideration, but with an annual $2 billion price tag it may be folded into the overall budget plan for ...
