California Cannabis Tax Revenue Grows Higher

California saw a 22 percent uptick in tax revenue from newly legalized recreational cannabis businesses in the second quarter of 2018.

Cannabis businesses paid $74.2 million in state tax from April 1 to June 30, which is an increase over $60.9 million paid from Jan. 1 to March 31, the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration said.

Despite the increase, the total of $135 million in cannabis tax revenue for the first six months of 2018 has fallen below Gov. Jerry Brown’s (D) estimate of $185 million. The administration has said it is difficult to predict how quickly cannabis ...
