California Tax Agency Beefing Up as Income Tax Appeals Rise (1)

California income tax appeals are increasing in volume and complexity, according to the Franchise Tax Board and Office of Tax Appeals.

The state’s administrative appeals office has seen a 40% increase since January in taxpayers appealing their corporate or personal income tax decisions from the tax board. Separately, the board secured $2 million from lawmakers to strengthen its budget for litigating complex cases.

The board asked lawmakers for more money because it is seeing “more and more litigation arising out of complex laws, non-conformity at the federal level, class action lawsuits and suits by high net worth individuals, among others.” ...
