Louisiana Parish Wants Rehearing in Walmart Sales Tax Dispute (1)

A parish tax collector is asking the Louisiana Supreme Court to reconsider its opinion that Walmart.com isn’t required to pay local sales taxes on sales made through the company’s online marketplace.

The court’s Jan. 29 ruling shifts the sales tax burden to consumers and tax collectors, according to an application for rehearing filed on behalf of Joseph Lopinto, sheriff and tax collector for Jefferson Parish.

The opinion also threatens to further complicate Louisiana’s complex sales tax system, which allows local parishes to impose their own sales taxes, according to the application, which was filed Wednesday.
