Maine became the first state in 2022 to legalize sports betting after Gov. Janet Mills on Monday signed into law a bill giving its native tribes control of the market.
Under the measure, the Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, and Maliseet tribes will control online sports betting in the state.
“This law provides meaningful economic opportunities for the Wabanaki Nations,” the Democratic governor said. “It incentivizes investment in Tribal communities, and it formalizes a collaboration process on policy that sets the foundation for a stronger relationship in the future.”
