Meijer Seeks Tax Breaks for Grocery Wars With Kroger, Walmart

In the grocery wars with Kroger and Walmart, Michigan-based Meijer Inc. is asking home-state lawmakers for two new tax weapons.

One set of tax breaks would let the sprawling regional chain save big on automated “mini-warehouses” it plans to put in the back of 50 stores. The other would incentivize a large processing center on commercially zoned land.

The state sales, use, and personal property tax breaks would be the first of their kind for Michigan. They could open up a wave of development for brick-and-mortar retailers, which could get tax advantages for building small distribution, or “micro-fulfillment,” centers ...
