Monsanto Chemical Purchases Eligible for Louisiana Tax Refund

Monsanto is entitled to a refund of Louisiana taxes it paid on purchases of a pollution-control chemical, because the state environmental agency incorrectly concluded the refund is only for pollution-control equipment, the Board of Tax Appeals found.

The Department of Revenue must try to come to an agreement with Monsanto about the $3.96 million refund it is due, plus interest, the board ordered.

Monsanto uses the chemical, sodium hydroxide, to neutralize acidic byproducts created during production of the herbicide Roundup, at its Luling, La., plant. Neutralization is required under federal and state environmental permits before the...
