North Carolina Lawmakers Push Piecemeal Tax Breaks (1)

The North Carolina legislature is advancing a number of tax relief measures as the state’s budget impasse continues.

Many of the provisions were in a budget bill vetoed by Gov. Roy Cooper (D) in June—partly, he said, because it “spends more on corporate tax breaks instead of significantly higher teacher pay.” North Carolina has been operating on temporary and piecemeal spending plans since the fiscal year began June 1, and teacher pay raises are still a sticking point.
