South Carolina legislative leaders are making overhaul of the state’s tax system a priority for next year’s session.
Both the Senate and House have established committees to consider a broad range of changes to a system that business groups and lawmakers say is outdated and complicated. A flat income tax and the lowering of the sales tax rate coupled with the elimination of exemptions were floated in the House during 2018, but such broad revisions took a back seat to efforts to react to changes that had been made to the federal tax code.
