Sweet Victory for Dried Cranberries in State Sales Tax Tiff

The campaign to ease sales tax burdens on dried cranberries finally yielded fruit after a panel of state tax administrators agreed Friday that the vitamin-packed superfood shouldn’t be defined as “candy.”

The governing board of the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement approved a plan allowing each member state to “exclude from its definition of ‘candy’ a preparation that has as its predominant ingredient dried or partially dried fruit along with one or more sweeteners.” The exclusion was added to the streamlined agreement, a pact establishing sales tax administration rules across 24 states.
