An Australian tax agent has been barred for five years for stealing more than A$500,000 ($357,500) worth of pandemic-related business tax credits from his clients.
An investigation by Australia’s national tax profession watchdog, the Tax Practitioners Board, found Gavin Swan diverted tax credits intended to support business clients to retain staff during the Covid-19 pandemic to accounts he controlled or accessed.
Last November, the board terminated Swan’s tax agent registration saying, “his conduct was inexcusable and was of the most egregious kind.”
