Senators Propose Bipartisan $78 Billion Rail Bill (Correct)

The leaders of the Senate Commerce panel are pushing to authorize $78 billion over five years for rail, freight, and safety programs in surface transportation legislation meant to aid the post-pandemic recovery.

The panel’s chair, Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), and ranking member, Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), offered the measure Thursday. The Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation bill includes $36 billion for rail, $28 billion for multimodal grants and freight initiatives, and $13 billion for safety programs. The panel is scheduled to mark up the legislation on June 16.
