Company Taxed in Oregon Urges Justices to Clarify Nexus Rules

California-based internet phone service provider Ooma Inc. has asked the US Supreme Court to review an Oregon top court ruling requiring it to pay state taxes to fund 9-1-1 calls.

The Oregon Supreme Court ruled in December that Ooma owes taxes of 75 cents per line per month on $2.2 million in revenue it generated between January 2013 and March 2016, when it had between 6,633 and 13,467 Oregon customers. Even though Ooma has no physical presence in the state, it intentionally accessed the Oregon market to attract customers, the court said, upholding the nearly $300,000 tax bill.
