Ban on False Liens Protects Former Treasury, IRS Heads (1)

A law prohibiting filing false liens against the property of US officers or employees because of their official work applies to both current and former federal workers, an appeals court ruled Wednesday.

The US Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit said it had never before decided whether the prohibition applied to former officers and employees or simply to current ones. Its ruling affirmed convictions against Timothy Jermaine Pate for violating the law by filing false liens against former IRS Commissioner John Koskinen and former Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew.
