Georgia Movies Made Millions in Undue Tax Credits: Watchdog

Limited reporting requirements and insufficient agency resources have resulted in millions in overpayments in film tax credits in Georgia, a state watchdog agency said.

Georgia offers one of the nation’s most lucrative film tax credit programs, awarding production companies up to 30% in tax credits for spending $500,000 or more when filming in the state. More than 450 movies and TV shows were eligible for the credits in 2016 alone. Over the last 10 years the state’s film tax credits grew from $141 million in 2010 to around $870 million in 2019.
