Germany to Give Companies Extra Year to Ask for IP Tax Exemption

Germany will give companies a one-year extension on asking for an exemption from a nearly century-old tax on intellectual property income, an official said.

In 2020, Germany said it would start applying a 1925 law that applies a withholding tax to nonresident companies on income from German-registered IP. The country’s Finance Ministry opened the possibility for companies to apply for an exemption from their past liability for the tax, and has received thousands of applications, said Martin Kreienbaum, director general, international taxation, at Germany’s Federal Ministry of Finance.
