Goliath Michigan Budget Battle Heads to State High Court

A legal battle that could force billions of dollars in payments from Michigan state coffers to local governments, and possibly alter the state’s tax policy landscape, is headed to the Michigan Supreme Court.

Michigan justices on Dec. 26 accepted an appeal sought by the state, hoping the court will save it from forking over decades worth of cash. A court of appeals panel found Michigan state budgets hadn’t been providing for local mandates and services required by state law since the late 1970s.
