HILL TAX BRIEFING: New IRS Head Could Be Management Whiz

After four years of being led by tax lawyer Chuck Rettig, the IRS is likely to get a commissioner whose expertise is in neither taxes nor lawyering.

Former IRS officials say the Biden administration needs to nominate a successor who is seen as non-partisan, has experience leading change in large organizations, and can make the most of the $80 billion Congress gave it to modernize its technology. The successor should also focus on improving customer service, and strengthen enforcement against wealthy individuals and corporations, they say.
