HILL TAX BRIEFING: Virus Upheaval Could Last Years at IRS

The coronavirus pandemic means an already weakened IRS will be forced to climb out from under a growing pile of work and billions of dollars in uncollected tax money.

The health crisis heightens an existing problem: The agency for years has faced budget cuts and a shrinking, aging workforce. In the years 2010-2018, the IRS lost nearly half of its revenue officers, who collect tax from delinquent individuals and businesses, and 39% of its revenue agents, who conduct audits.
