IRS Faces Renewed Call to Help Domestic Abuse Survivors Get Aid

Lawmakers are renewing calls for the IRS to develop a process to help domestic violence survivors access virus relief payments that have been withheld by their abusers.

Advocates at domestic violence support organizations and legal aid clinics across the country have reported instances where abusers are stealing or withholding payments—part of the CARES Act (Public Law 116-136)—meant for their spouses. The payments are worth up to $1,200 per individual, plus an extra $500 for each dependent child under the age of 17.
