IRS to Pilot Program for Secure, Remote ID Verification in June

Starting in June the IRS plans to pilot a more secure program for authentication of taxpayers accessing online applications, according to the agency’s watchdog.

The IRS currently has 63 public-facing applications that taxpayers can access from the internet, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration said in a report released Thursday. While the agency has made some progress to comply with the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s 2017 guidelines for authenticating users, its current methods don’t fully meet the requirements, TIGTA said.
