Lawmakers Eye Tax Code Changes to Boost Rural Broadband

A bill from Sens. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) and Tina Smith (D-Minn.) would give tax-exempt cooperative organizations more access to government funds such as rural broadband grants.

The legislation, introduced in the Senate April 4, would amend tax code Section 501(c)(12) to ensure cooperatives wouldn’t lose their exemption when receiving the government funds, which could also include Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster relief. More must be done to protect the tax exemptions, as rural cooperatives provide critical access to electricity and the internet, the senators said.
