Legalized Weed Could Sweep $166 Million into Wisconsin Coffers

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers said Monday that he hopes to collect $166 million annually under a plan to legalize and tax recreational marijuana.

Evers will develop a plan to regulate adult-use cannabis as part of his 2021-23 biennial budget and present it to the legislature on Feb. 16. Evers, a first-term Democrat, said there is strong support for a legal, regulated cannabis market and neighboring states, including Illinois and Michigan, are already taking advantage of the national trend toward decriminalization. A spokesperson for Evers said the proposal would generate $165.8 million for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2022. ...
