Maryland Becomes First State With Tax Whistleblower Reward Law

The first state whistleblower program modeled after the IRS version will take effect this October in Maryland, after a bill passed by the state General Assembly became law this week.

The bill (H.B. 804) was enacted Tuesday without Gov. Larry Hogan’s (R) signature. Lawmakers hope the measure will crack down on tax fraud and help recoup lost revenue.

“Now, Maryland can be a shining example for the rest of the states to follow,” Siri Nelson, executive director of the National Whistleblower Center, said in a news release Wednesday
