Mayo Clinic Defends $11.5 Million Tax Refund Victory on Appeal

The Mayo Clinic’s $11.5 million tax refund victory should be upheld because Congress didn’t mean to prevent such clinics from getting tax benefits designated for qualifying educational organizations, Mayo told the Eighth Circuit.

The clinic was responding to an appeal by the U.S. government after a district court ruled for the clinic. If upheld, the ruling could provide tax benefits to other nonprofit hospitals with research and educational arms and could encourage more nonprofits to open such arms.
