Michigan Governor Seeks to Double Gas Tax to Fund Road Repairs

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will ask Michigan’s tax-tight Republican Legislature to raise the state’s gas tax by 100 percent, in a plan to greatly expand the state’s infrastructure spending.

Whitmer, a Democrat who ran her campaign on “fixing the damn roads,” will propose a 45-cent increase to the state gas tax, which currently sits at $0.44.13, Kurt Weiss, spokesperson for the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget, told Bloomberg Tax in a March 4 email. Details of how and when the tax would climb will be released March 5 during Whitmer’s budget address.
