N.Y. Idea for IRS-State Free File Plan Draws Mixed Reviews

A proposal floated by two top New York officials for an integrated federal-state “public option” for free tax filing might be a starting point for building a new system, but it would face numerous hurdles.

The plan calls for the IRS to develop its own program as an alternative to the Free File system it has offered low- and middle-income taxpayers since 2002 through a voluntary alliance of private tax-prep companies—and then encourage states to link to the one-stop taxpayer assistance.

Critics of the IRS’ current program like the idea, but other commentators have doubts.
