New Jersey Senate Panel Stakes Ground in Tax-Break Clash

A special New Jersey Senate committee on Friday staked out its ground in its battle with Gov. Phil Murphy (D) over the reform of the state’s troubled system for granting economic development tax breaks.

The report by the bipartisan Senate Select Committee on Economic Growth Strategies was the latest development in a continuing clash over how to change the state Economic Development Authority’s $11 billion incentive programs for job creation and retention. Authorization for the programs lapsed in June after Murphy (D) and lawmakers failed to agree on reforms in the 2018-2019 legislative session.
