New Tax Rules for Non-Resident Telecommuters to Massachusetts

People who earn income in Massachusetts but don’t live in the state, and are telecommuting because of the Covid-19 pandemic, will continue to pay income taxes to the Bay State, the state’s tax agency said in an emergency rule.

The rule, issued Tuesday, takes effect immediately and will sunset on Dec. 31 or 90 days after the governor lifts the state of emergency. The Massachusetts Department of Revenue will hold a remote hearing on it on Aug. 27.
