Newsom Vetoes Law Targeting Nonprofits Tied to Insurrection

Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill Thursday that would have given California clear authority to revoke the nonprofit status of organizations that incite or participate in insurrections, saying the issue is a judicial one.

The Democratic governor returned the bill (S.B. 834), which was a response to the Jan. 6 insurrection at the US Capitol. The attorney general and the Franchise Tax Board already have the authority to revoke tax-exempt status under common law, but the bill would have put that authority in statute.
