Governor Vetoes Tax Credit for Californians Without Cars (1)

California Gov. Gavin Newsom rejected a bill Wednesday that would have given low-income Californians a $1,000 tax credit per household that didn’t own a car, saying the $1 billion price tag is too high.

The Democratic governor used a statement in his veto message for the bill (S.B. 457) similar to the one he has used in several other vetoes in the past few weeks, invoking lower-than expected revenues in the first months of the fiscal year and the importance of focusing on existing obligations such as education, health care, and public safety.
