Poland Plans $2.8 Billion Tax on Utilities to Curb Energy Costs

Poland’s government will seek to raise 13.5 billion zloty ($2.8 billion) from a windfall tax on utilities to help cover spiraling energy bills for municipalities and hospitals in its latest attempt to contain public dismay over rising cost of living.

The proposal unveiled in a late-night tweet on Saturday by State Assets Minister Jacek Sasin will ease the pressure on the budget after rounds of tax cuts, price freezes and other handouts designed to shield households from the highest inflation in a quarter of a century.
