Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) told reporters Dec. 5 that the Senate is working on a “skinny version” of a lame-duck tax bill that would extend temporary tax breaks known as extenders and include some retirement provisions.
“We’re just trying to figure out what can get 60 in the Senate,” Thune said. Republicans need nine Democratic votes in the Senate to pass a tax bill. The bill could be attached to a year end spending bill, Thune said. Republicans had previously talked about doing a tax package separately but that looks difficult now, he said.
