Stalled Medical Bill Arbitration to Resume With New Directive

Arbitration cases will resume for medical payment disputes involving out-of-network health-care providers covered by the No Surprises Act under guidance issued Friday by a trio of federal agencies.

The guidance for independent dispute resolution (IDR), or arbitration, is effective for payment determinations made as of Feb. 6 for services provided as of Oct. 25, 2022 for plan years beginning as of Jan. 1, 2022. The guidance was issued by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the departments of Labor and the Treasury.
