Tax Court Tries to Get Taxpayers Free Legal Help in IRS Disputes

Most taxpayers represent themselves in disputes with the IRS. The court that hears their cases wants to change that.

The U.S. Tax Court is working with tax clinics and pro bono programs to make it easier for unrepresented taxpayers to get free legal assistance.

Getting taxpayers access to free legal advice can help them navigate a sometimes confusing process and make it easier for them to present a clear argument to the court, attorneys told Bloomberg Tax. But it also can help expedite the court process and offer attorneys the chance to gain experience.
