Three Tax Avoidance Schemes Top 2020 IRS Enforcement Priorities

The IRS identified three types of tax shelters it is especially concerned about, indicating the agency will focus more on cracking down on organizers and users of the tax avoidance strategies.

The arrangements, identified in an annual report released Jan. 6, are abusive trust arrangements that involve the use of multiple layers of trusts to hide ownership of assets and income; “micro-captive” insurance structures designed to take advantage of tax benefits while often lacking the true attributes of insurance; and land conservation transactions known as syndicated conservation easements.
