U.S. Wine Merchants Say They Will Suffer From Tariffs on France

The U.S. wine and handbag industries and importers of French cookware would suffer if tariffs are imposed in retaliation for France’s digital tax, industry representatives testified.

“These tariffs would be the greatest threat to the wine industry since prohibition in 1919,” Tribeca Wine Merchants managing partner Benjamin Aneff told a Jan. 7 interagency hearing. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative has outlined a list of imports from France that could be hit with steep duties unless France rescinds its digital tax.
