Uber Seeks Delay in Kenya Digital Services Tax Implementation (1)

Uber Technologies Inc. said Wednesday that it was asking Kenya to delay its new digital services tax, one of the first in Africa.

The 1.5% digital service tax is collected at the time of transfer of payment for the service to the service provider, according to the new regulations. Uber, Jumia Technologies, and other online marketplace and digital service providers will be among the most affected.

For taxpayers with a permanent establishment in the country, the tax is offset against annual taxes; for non-residents without a permanent establishment, however, it is a final tax. The tax authority has said it ...
