United Kingdom Tax Agency Announces Exemption for Work From Home Expenses Due to Coronavirus

The United Kingdom HM Revenue and Customs Oct. 13 announced tax exemptions for reimbursements for work from home expenses due to the coronavirus pandemic. The announcement includes: 1) a threshold of 6 British pounds (US$7.82) per week for eligible expenses without proof, effective April 6; 2) evidence requirements if expenses exceed 6 pounds; 3) exemptions based on the employee’s tax rate; 4) expenses eligible for the exemption; 5) an online portal to facilitate the claim procedure, effective Oct. 1; and 6) an option to claim exemptions as a lump sum payment, effective for the 2020-21 tax year.
