Sonoco Hit With Worker Class Lawsuit Over Medical, Family Leave

Sonoco Products Co. violates federal law by assessing employees disciplinary points for missing work while exercising their job-protected family and medical leave rights, a new class lawsuit charges.

The company’s practice or policy is illegal under the Family and Medical Leave Act, Gregorio Calderon said in a complaint filed Thursday in the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

Employees are fired when they accumulate too many disciplinary points, even if some of the points were assessed for absences covered by the FMLA, the suit said.
