EPA’s New England Boss Tackles Lead Pipes, Other Legacy Hazards

The Biden administration’s vow to clean up legacy environmental hazards poses a special challenge in New England, home to some of the nation’s oldest infrastructure and pollution sites, according to the EPA’s new Boston-based regional administrator.

Case in point: President Joe Biden’s pledge to replace every lead service line in the nation.

Because New England was industrialized so long ago, “you will find more lead pipe here than other regions"—sometimes layered haphazardly over many decades, and often in cramped spaces and tiny towns, David Cash, regional administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Region 1, said in an interview.
