Speedy Trial Act Wasn’t Violated by Months-Long Covid-19 Delay

An immigrant’s conviction for illegally re-entering the US after being deported was valid despite the fact his trial was put on hold for almost a year because of the Covid-19 pandemic, a divided Ninth Circuit said.

The Speedy Trial Act’s 70-day period to go to trial was properly extended to accommodate the ends of justice, the opinion by Judge Sandra S. Ikuta said Monday.
