California airline cabin crews would be able to negotiate with their employers on taking rest breaks while on duty under a measure cleared Thursday by the state legislature.
The bill (S.B. 41), which the state Assembly passed on a 71-0 vote, settles a longstanding legal disagreement over compensating crew employees in flight. It would exempt certain cabin crew members from the state’s meal and rest break requirements if they have a collective bargaining agreement with their employer. The bill passed the state Senate on Feb. 27 by a 37-0 vote.
