Japan Exports Climb at Faster Pace as China Shipments Surge (2)

Gains in Japanese exports accelerated in January, propelled by surging shipments to China even as a winter wave of the coronavirus depressed trade to other key markets.

The value of overseas shipments climbed 6.4% from the prior year, rising for a second month and picking up from December’s 2% pace, the finance ministry reported Wednesday. Economists had predicted a 6.8% increase.

A 51% surge in exports of chip-making gear and a jump in shipments of plastics drove the gains. Demand was strong in Asia and in China in particular, though holiday distortions likely inflated the increases.
