The Chilean government is planning to provide partial wage subsidies to employers to encourage them to take on staff during the next six months as part of efforts to revive an economy battered by the Covid-19 pandemic, President Sebastian Piñera said Sept. 27.
Almost two million Chileans have been put out of work since the outbreak began and another 700,000 have been furloughed without pay under the government’s job protection law.
Under the program (Spanish), companies that rehire furloughed staff are to be paid a subsidy of 160,000 Chilean pesos (U.S. $204) per month per employee.
